Hannon Hydraulics had the opportunity at helping a roller coaster manufacturer build a thrilling pneumatically launched ride by engineering, manufacturing and installing the joints of pipe that supplied the power to launch the coaster at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
The joints of pipe were 40 ft. long and 50 inches on the inner diameter. A large air compressor would generate a volume of air that was instantaneously released into the joints of pipe (that Hannon had bored, honed, and bolted back together). The piston on the I.D. of the pipe accelerates and launches the roller coaster to over 100 mph once the air is released. When the ride is complete, the piston is retrieved back into launch position using the cable that followed the piston upon launch.
